My blog is my explorations into teaching as inquiry. In this online space I will accumulate, aggregate and create ideas around 'flipping' my teaching and learning and redesigning fun learning spaces for my students. My passions are literacy, visual arts, e-learning and inquiry. Join me on my journey!

Classroom Design
Wow twitter is great! @sarahmartin74 just tweeted a link to the Mind Shift website. Great practical and 'do-able' ideas for classroom designs. I love the concept of the 'cave', the 'mountain' and the 'campfire!
Further food for thought (quotes from the article):
'Creating comfortable spaces that reflected the world outside of the classroom...'
'Teachers...took a close look at their own homes to see how they work and talk with their families.'

Maori Language Class
Saturday was the completion of my basic Maori Language Course at Nayland Community College. Our class visited the Whakatu Marae. We were welcomed on to the marae with a Powhiri, shared some kai (great homemade scones - yum!) and shared our Mihimihi :)
That was the nerve wrecking part! We all did really well. Then we learnt about the history of the marae and more about Maori Culture. A great day :) Thank you to our kaiako (teacher) Ani & to Mike who lead our group at the marae.

Blogging as E-portfolios
In the four years that I have been blogging with students I have always set up the class blog ready for the start of the year. I would love to set it up individual student's blogs. First we will look at a variety of class blogs and analyse which blogs work well. The students will learn the processes for establishing a blog so that they can create their own blog. I aim for the blog to become the students e-portfoilos, which hopefully they will continue next year. Choosing an e-portfolios platform has been part of my thinking for about 3 years now! I have played around with Google Apps and now that blogger is linked I feel that this would be an avenue worth exploring. There will be 'can dos' and 'must dos' for the students - I think there is a need for common features amongst the students' blogs to aid navigation for students, parents, whanau & teachers e.g. labels.
